AMD recently dropped “New Zealand”, their dual GPU card using two Tahiti dies. In doing so, however, they left the “Radeon HD 7990” free for use by any AIB partners willing to engineer their own dual GPU cards. Hightech Information System, or HIS for short, is soon to release such a card but for some reason doesn’t want to use the “HD 7990” branding. Instead, their offering will be known as the Radeon HD 7970 X2 and, judging from the specifications of the card, will be a cut above the HD 7990s we know.

HIS’s card will sport a large tri-slot cooler featuring two heatsinks (one for each GPU) cooled by a large fan each, and power delivery will be taken care of by three 8-pin PCI-e power connectors allowing for up to 525 watts to be sent to the card (150 watts per PCI-e power connector and 75 watts from the motherboard). The two GPUs will communicate using a LucidLogix switch as opposed to the PLX bridge used by the Powercolor HD7990, and will run at 1,050 MHz – much higher than the 925 MHz of the Powercolor’s offering. Memory is taken care of by 6 GB GDDR5 running at 6.00 GHz (up from the reference HD 7970 speed of 5.50 GHz), while display outputs include two DVI ports and a quadrant of mini-DisplayPort outputs.
