In a world soon to be overrun by PCI-Express Gen 4 NVMe SSDs, we find ourselves looking at a Gen 3 drive. This may seen almost archaic at a glance, but unless you have an AMD X570 motherboard you’re currently limited to Gen 3 speeds. As Gen 4 drives carry a price premium, future-proofing isn’t necessarily a wise choice. Unless, that is, you can make use of the speed right now.

EK is Releasing an M.2 NVMe Heatsink for Next Generation Form Factor SSDs

EK Water Blocks, the Slovenia-based premium computer liquid cooling gear manufacturer, is releasing a passive heatsink for M.2 NVMe Next Generation Form Factor SSDs. Although it’s not a water cooling part, it is a much needed aesthetical and functional heatsink for many PC owners. It is not a secret that M.2 NVMe SSDs can overheat very easily and be subdued to thermal throttling, thus losing performance. The heatsink brings 8-11°C improvement in SSDs temperatures, or even more with sufficient air flow.

Price: $114.99

Since 2008, my first introduction to a consumer level desktop SSD (Intel X-25M), things have changed dramatically. At the time there were MLC drives that cost above $3,000 USD for 128GB, but more importantly Intel’s X25-M was about $700 at retail prices. There wasn’t much competition and the industry was in its infancy. Fast forward to the end of 2014, a good six years later and things are dramatically different. We’ve seen the sudden rush of vendors into the market and we’ve seen many depart as well.

ADATA Launches the Premier SP610 2.5” Solid State Drive

Premier SP610

SATA 6Gb/s SSD with SMI controller

June 30, 2014 – ADATA™ Technology, a leading manufacturer of high-performance DRAM modules and NAND Flash application products, today launches the Premier SP610 2.5” SATA III (6Gb/s) SSD. With an SMI controller, the Premier SP610 maintains high read/write speeds consistently for stable performance, and also features advanced BCH ECC (Error Correction Code) technology. The Premier SP610 is ideal for PC builders who are looking to make the jump from mechanical drives to the exponentially faster speeds of solid state drives.

The Premier SP610 offers sequential read/write speeds up to 560/450 MB, and 4KB random read/write speeds up to 73,000/72,000 IOPS, which greatly improves the performance of data transfer. It also provides excellent performance for multitasking, including games and often-used applications/programs.

The built-in BCH ECC (up to 66bit/1KB) of the Premier SP610 can improve transfer reliability and help protect data. In addition, compared to traditional drives, the Premier SP610 consumes very little power at only 80mW, which prolongs the life expectancy and reduces power consumption significantly. The ADATA Premier SP610 series includes 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and a massive 1TB in capacity.
