Intel’s flagship HEDT (High End Desktop) processor using the LGA2011 platform, the Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition, has been ousted from its throne by the new Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition (S-Spec SR0WR) which started selling in Singapore for S $1,425 (about US $1,170 at the current exchange rate).

Based on the same 32 nm Sandy Bridge-E architecture as its predecessor, the Core i7-3970X still has six physical cores but has had a base clock speed bump of 200 MHz and Turbo increase of 100 MHz to 3.50 GHz and 4.00 GHz respectively. This increase in speed has, however, resulted in an increase of TDP; while the Core i7-3960X had a TDP of 130W the new Core i7-3970X is up to 150W.

As with its smaller brother, this new CPU is HyperThreading-enabled for a total of twelve logical cores, 256 KB L2 cache per physical core, a 15 MB shared pool of L3 cache and an integrated quad-channel DDR memory controller supporting up to 128 GB RAM. The processor is so new that it is not yet mentioned on Intel’s website, and international availability does not yet have a known date. Source — MyDrivers
