With the recent announcement of the new NVIDIA RTX 30 series graphics cards, there has been a lot of buzz, confusion, and worry about compatibility issues with current and future power supply units. Specifically people are worried about the 12-pin PCI-e sockets on the new Ampere Founder’s Edition cards. As one of the leading brands in the retail power supply business, Cooler Master felt it was necessary to directly clarify the situation on compatibility between their power supply units and these new graphics cards.

After a large amount of research and discussion both internally and with external brands, Cooler Master can confidently state that provided you have or purchase one of their compatible models, you will have no problems with powering your new RTX 30 series graphics card/system. Any of Cooler Master’s units that is at least 750W (650W for RTX 3070 models) and has at least 2 8-pin PCI-e connectors (1 for RTX 3070 models) will absolutely work with an RTX 30 series GPU, out of the box.

Users have no need to worry about compatibility issues with their new RTX 30 series graphics cards. The Ampere Founder’s Edition cards will come with 12-pin adaptors to connect with the standard 8-pin PCI-e connectors in box. Currently all other mainstream graphics card manufacturers have stated that, at least for this first generation of RTX 30 series graphics cards, they will continue to use the standard 8-pin PCI-e connectors for their cards. In both cases, Cooler Master’s current spec compatible PSUs will work with these new cards without having to purchase any additional cables/adapters.

Cooler Master has prepared a list of compatible power supply units that will work with the new 30 series cards with models ranging from 80 PLUS Bronze all the way up through 80 PLUS Platinum efficiency ratings. This list includes currently announced but not yet released products that will soon be released to the market. Due to the lack of compatibility issues, Cooler Master will not include 12-pin connectors with current or soon to be released power supply models. At such time as the new 12-pin connector becomes standard among a large portion of graphics card models, Cooler Master will reassess the situation and make the changes necessary to more than satisfy the needs of their end users.
